About Sukhothai
Sukhothai was the first capital of the Thai kingdom and its historical park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — preserves some of Thailand's finest Buddhist monuments, including the iconic lotus-bud chedi of Wat Mahathat surrounded by moats and rice paddies. The province is most magical during the annual Loy Krathong festival when thousands of candle-lit floats drift across the park's ponds. Beyond the ruins, Sukhothai produces celebrated ceramics (Sangkhalok ware), and the surrounding countryside offers cycling routes through sleepy villages.
