About Lopburi
Lopburi is one of Thailand's oldest cities, inhabited continuously since the Dvaravati period and later a second capital under King Narai the Great in the 17th century, whose palace and French-inspired buildings still stand in the historic quarter. The city is most famous — and infamous — for its enormous population of macaque monkeys, who colonise the ancient Khmer shrine of Prang Sam Yot and neighbouring buildings, celebrated with an annual Monkey Buffet Festival every November. The nearby King Narai National Museum and the Baan Vichayen residence of the Greek adventurer Constantine Phaulkon offer fascinating insights into Thailand's diplomatic history.
