Mukdahan is a small but strategically important province on the Mekong River, connected to Savannakhet, Laos by the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, making it a key gateway for overland travel to Laos and Vietnam. Phu Pha Thoep National Park on the province's southern edge features extraordinary mushroom-shaped rock formations rising from dense forest, especially beautiful in the rainy season.
