Nakhon Phanom sits on a particularly scenic stretch of the Mekong where the river is broad and the mountains of Laos rise steeply on the opposite bank, earning it a reputation as one of the most beautiful views in all of Isan. The province is home to Wat That Phanom, one of the most sacred Buddhist shrines in Southeast Asia, whose gleaming white Lao-style chedi draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year. Nakhon Phanom also has a strong Vietnamese heritage from wartime refugee communities, reflected in its food and cultural festivals.
